Notre Dame’s offense started off well, consistently posting 115+ efficienies, but then lost PG Kyle McAlarney to injury. Their offense then went through an inconsistent phase, with high peaks scattered among mediocre games. Recently they seem to finally have adjusted to McAlarney’s absence, with 6 straight games over a 125 efficiency. This recent good play has been accompanied by increased minutes for freshman F Luke Harangody.

Winthrop garnered some early-season attention for keeping it close against UNC, Maryland, and Wisconsin. They were able to do so because their offense and defense were both playing well at the time. Both units had a midseason swoon, but the offense has recovered nicely and is at its peak performance now. Unfortunately for the Eagles, their defense hasn’t been able to regain its form. Their defensive efficiency was sub-95 in in 11 of their first 14 games. In their last 14 games, it’s been worse than that 10 times. On a positive note, Winthrop’s best 6-game stretch was early in the year, against some of their toughest competition, so they’ve proven they do have the ability to play at a high level even against very good teams.
